Writer-director Kevin Smith appeared on Friday’s airing of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Smith, a long-time fan of the show, came on the program to promote his new AMC series Geeking Out and his latest feature film Yoga Hosers.
“I wound up talking about my wake-&-bake morning ritual and texting with @harleyquinnsmith_ [Smith’s daughter Harley],” Smith posted along with a photo on Instagram. “I had a legit good time and you can see it in my face.”
Smith, well-known for his honest rhetoric in relating person experiences, began his interview with Colbert with an anecdote of feeling familiar with the late-night host despite this being their first meeting.
“This is going to sound weird, but I wake up to you every morning,” Smith told Colbert. “You’re the first face I see when I wake up.”
After divulging the noted fact that Smith is a “wake-and-baker,” he shared that after getting stoned, the first thing he does is watch the previous night’s Late Show, pantomiming a large drag saying, “Preach! Preach!”
Revealing the back-stage happenings at The Late Show, Smith also shared with the audience and experience he had with Colbert prior to coming onstage, involving Colbert’s cited lines from the film A Man for All Seasons:
“If you like that movie, that’s like pornography,” said Smith to a roaring crowd upon Colbert's citation of Paul Scholfield’s character from the film. After which, the two went on in unison quoting another one of the film’s memorable lines.
The rapport between Colbert and his guest was easily telegraphed on the grinning faces of both men. At one point, while Smith retold a story about his pet name Dumbledick, and how he had to explain to his daughter that the moniker his wife had given him was of a sexual origin, Colbert removed his glasses and hid his blush-red face behind pages of show notes.
Perhaps this man crush will develope into a full-blown bromance; only time will tell. Smith seems to have left the door open for the relationship, thanking Colbert via social media:
