“Some inspirational stuff!”
On August 14, 2018, SModcast published its 400th episode, releasing “Vulgarthon 2018: Vol 1.” The monumental episode of the 11 year old podcast featured the recorded Q&As from Vulgarthon 2018’s theater 1.
“Lots of fun information included in all these Q&As,” said SModcast host Kevin Smith in the introduction to the episode. “Some inspirational stuff!”

The episode's discussions and Q&As followed the films Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, A Better Place, and Drawing Flies – the original film lineup that was screened at the first Vulgarton, 20 years ago.
The Clerks Q&A began with a unique discussion between Kevin Smith and his daughter Harley Quinn Smith, star of the film Yoga Hosers, who had never before seen the film that launched her father’s career.
“I’ve had so many people tell me that movie has changed their life,” said Harley. “It lived up to the hype, for sure.”
Other Q&A participants on the episode include Jason Mewes, Walt Flann, Bryan Johnson, Vincent Pereira, Malcolm Ingram and Brian O’Halloran.
“If you weren’t there … Here’s your chance to attend Vulgarthon,” said Smith in the intro to episode 400. “This is how I celebrated my birthday.”
An episode of recorded Q&As after films predating SModcast, which began in 2007, is a fitting treat for fans of the podcast. Listeners have been able to share in the development of many of Kevin Smith’s projects through the longevity of the podcast. From his work on Reaper (008: The Entirely Too Over-Long Episode) to Hollyweed’s debut on Rivit.TV (398: Hall H for Hollyweed), listeners have taken part and gained inside access to Smith’s work.
Perhaps one of the most poignant examples of SModcast listeners being in on day one of a project is SModcast 259: The Walrus and The Carpenter, in which our heroes try to seal a movie deal. This was the birth of the film Tusk. On this episode, listeners can hear the evolution of the creative process. What starts out as Smith reading to cohost Scott Mosier an incredibly bizarre advertisement for a tenant on a home rental site, ends in asking fans to use the hashtags #WalrusYes or #WalrusNo to decide whether their jazz-like riff on the advertisement should come to life as a movie.
Schecky! A fan favorite.
Most episodes have been recorded in Smith’s house, so listeners have got to know the Smith family through the podcast. Jennifer Schwalbach, whom Smith might describe as the better half of his marital union, makes her SModcast debut on episode 020: Here Comes the Bride. An eight-year-old Harley Quinn Smith makes her first appearance on episode 047: Destroy All Monsters. Kevin Smith’s mother Grace is also a repeat guest (see episode 102: SMomcast). And house favorite Scheky can be heard on many episodes, always dismissed by Smith’s “Schecky!” yell.
Smith is a storyteller whose ability to employ honesty, vulnerability, and humor has kept SModcast relevant in an innumerable sea of podcasts. Fans can appreciate the “Ponder Rock” episodes of the podcast which featured a younger more introspective “Emo Kev.”
